When we first heard that term, I had no idea what it meant. I was sort of offended that the lady said it. Who says that about a child?
I have learned a few things since then. Little six has very coarse, very dense, very tight hair. It has major "shrinkage". Her hair type is sometimes called "bad hair" or "nappy hair". I don't call it either. It's just her hair. We try to always have a "protective" hairstyle in. We "co-wash". We use "natural" oils. We "moisturize" everyday. We have her sleep with her hair "tied down". She sleeps on a "satin pillowcase". We usually do the "front" half one way and the "back" half a different way. Sometimes we do "cornrows". Other times we do "flat twists". Most of the time we do "two strand twists" on the "back" half. It takes approximately 4-6 hours to "do" the "back" half. It takes a little less time to do the "front" half. We try to use "all natural" products. Occasionally, we don't! We don't use heat - although I did try it two times. I regretted it both times. She can sit for the entire "hair time" without so much as a whine. I, however have been known to whine during her "hair time". My hands are far more capable than I ever gave them credit for (mostly I have taken my hands for granted all these years.)
I will tell a bit more about this journey and how it has evolved over the next few posts. For those of you who want to know, I will share some products we have/are using etc.
It is a journey in and of itself - her hair. I learn something new every time I "do" it. We are (little six and I) learning together.
